Did you know that May is Melanoma and skin cancer awareness month? This is a cause that is very near and dear to my heart, so I have partnered with Cabana Life and Stand Up to Cancer to share my favorites in sun protection and some best practices for sun safety. I have had 2 basal cell carcinomas removed, and my parents and grandparents have all had multiple surgeries to remove skin cancers. I encourage you to get a skin cancer screening at your Dermatologist, and be proactive to protect your skin this summer.
Some surprising statistics from the Skin Cancer Foundation:
- Each year in the U.S. over 5.4 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people
- Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer
- Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined
- One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime
Since having my carcinomas removed, I’ve done a lot of research for fashionable & effective sun protection clothing and sunscreens that are both safe and effective.
Cabana Life – The Best in Sun Protective Clothing
Cabana Life combines fashion and function by offering 50+ UV protection. Their rash guards and cover-ups are my very favorite, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. While a typical lightweight cotton t-shirt offers a UPF of approximately 7, Cabana Life’s entire collection has 50+ UV protection. Their fabrics are light, soft, and come the cutest prints & patterns. I love that they allow you to stay protected without compromising style.
Stand Up To Cancer – Spreading Awareness and Saving Lives
Stand Up To Cancer is a initiative created to accelerate innovative cancer research that will get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives. By galvanizing the entertainment industry, SU2C has set out to generate awareness, educate the public on cancer prevention and help more people diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors. Cabana Life is helping to promote awareness and donating a portion of proceeds from it’s limited edition PROTECT rash guard to Stand Up To Cancer from May 1 – August 31, 2017. How to Choose The Right Sunscreen
One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that not all sunscreens are created equal. In the past, I threw any random sunscreen in my cart without giving it much thought. However, I learned that there is an important difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens (using zinc and titanium dioxide) block UVA & UVB by keeping them from absorbing into the skin, while chemical sunscreens actually absorb the sun’s harmful rays & act as hormone disruptors. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite mineral sunscreens below, and they are all rated best for safety on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database. I use the Skin Deep database to research the safety and ingredients of all products I put on my skin. My personal favorite is Beautycounter, and I use it everyday. Beautycounter is a mission-based and education-first company, focused on improving access to safer products. They have the highest safety standards in the skincare industry, avoiding over 1,000 toxic ingredients that can cause potential health problems.
You can learn more about my favorite safer skincare here, or feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer. I am by no means an expert, but I have done a lot of research on this subject and it is something I feel very passionate about.
Thank you for reading, and remember to always protect your skin! I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below, and you can also check out more of my summer essentials here!
